What are dental implants?

Implants are the only permanent way to replace lost teeth. They are small titanium screws that an implant dentist will place directly in your jaw bone, with a minor operation. This usually only requires local anaesthetic, and is meticulously planned beforehand. The implant team at Warrendale Dental Practice in Herefordshire is highly experienced in placing dental implants.

Why are implants better than, say, standard dentures or bridges?

Recent research has shown that dental implants can last 25 years or more when looked after properly. This will require good oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist and hygienist, but if you treat them well your implants will serve you perfectly for many years.

Implants are the only tooth replacement that are anchored to the bone, providing unrivalled stability. For example, dentures secured by implants won’t become loose or uncomfortable. This looseness is often caused by gum and bone tissue receding, common after tooth loss. Dental implants support bone growth and help to stop this happening.

Because of this stability, you will be able to enjoy a full, healthy diet, including your favourite treats (in moderation!), without having to worry about your dentures slipping.

Does implant treatment hurt?

At our Herefordshire practice, most patients report implant placement is less traumatic than having a tooth removed. It is normally carried out under local anaesthetic, so you will feel no pain. Some people experience mild bruising for a few days after placement, which over-the-counter painkillers will usually control.
