What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are rather like false fingernails for your teeth! A dental veneer is a thin layer of tooth-coloured material, either porcelain, ceramic or composite cemented to the outside surface of a tooth to improve its cosmetic appearance. Veneers can be placed on single teeth and made to blend in with the natural teeth or they can be placed over multiple teeth to totally rebuild your smile. (Smile Makeover)


Why are veneers placed?

There are a wide variety of reasons why patients choose dental veneers:

• Stained teeth - badly stained teeth that cannot be improved by polishing or teeth whitening treatments can be greatly improved by dental veneers that mask stained teeth.
• Damaged teeth - teeth that have become badly worn from acid erosion or from excessive grinding, as well as those that have been chipped or broken, can be repaired with veneers. A small chip on a tooth can quickly be rebuilt with a composite bonded filling. A single damaged tooth can easily be repaired with a porcelain veneer that blends in perfectly with your natural teeth.
• Gaps or Spaces - veneers can be used to reshape adjacent teeth and close gaps and spaces.
• Irregular or Crooked teeth - The best treatment for crooked teeth is by straightening using Invisalign or other orthodontic treatments as this conserves tooth tissue. Such treatments can take up to a year or longer. A quicker result involving minimal tooth damage can be achieved using veneers. The result can be aesthetically just as satisfying but in a fraction of the time and it is possible to modify the shade of the teeth as well as masking any irregular shaped or stained teeth.
