The oral cavity is made up of the lips, the lining of the lips and cheeks, the teeth, the floor of the mouth under the tongue, the front two thirds of the tongue, the roof of the mouth (hard and soft palate), the gums and the small area behind the wisdom teeth.
Oral cancer is on the increase and can affect any or all of these areas.
The Facts
More than 5,000 people are diagnosed with oral cancer in the UK each year.
Around 1,800 die from the disease annually in the UK - on average one death every 5 hours.
The 5-year survival rate for sufferers of mouth cancer is 50%. About 70 per cent of mouth cancers are detected at a late stage, reducing chances of survival.*
